American Apparel Controversial BlackFace Ad

American Apparel has recently unveiled a BlackFace Ad for their clothing line.
The blogoshphere is calling the multi-billion dollar industry to remove the advertisement.
What do you think,is it fashion expressing itself or an insult to African heritage?

Here are few pictures of Sasha Gaye-Hunt the model used for the ad.

  1. Well, actually it’s NOT an American Apparel ad at all. It’s a fashion spread that appeared in i-D magazine back in August created and designed entirely by the editors of the magazine (not by American Apparel).

American Apparel addressed it on their blog back in August and many many many people commented:

I honestly don’t know why people keep thinking this is an AA ad. It looks NOTHING like any ad they have ever done. I mean…first of all, she has CLOTHES ON! And secondly, she wasn’t photographed on a bed or lying on the floor like all their other ads!

  2. It’s racist — there’s no real question about that. I don’t care if they did it by accident (which they almost certainly didn’t), it’s obvious from the reaction that it’s hurtful and demeaning.
