Rene Marie “Lift Ev’ry Voice And Sing” Denver State Of City Address – Rene Marie caused a bit of controversy in Denver on Tuesday,when she decided to perform “Lift Ev’ry Voice And Sing,” also known as the “Black National Anthem,” at a State of the City address.Marie was supposed to sing “Star-Spangled Banner,” and she surprised the entire crowd when she decided to do something else.”Lift Ev’ry Voice and Sing,” was first sung 108-years ago at an Abraham Lincoln’s birthday celebration.You can watch the performance,after the jump.

  1. This was not appropriate for the venue. The black anthem is not for city business or sporting events but it is sung when blacks gather for King day celebrations. White people will freak if they keep hearing it when they don’t expect it. If she cannot sing the real version then she should have not taken the job.
    Its like going to McDonalds and getting a happy meal when you asked for a big Mac.
