State Of The Union 2011 Video: Watch Obama Speech

A very optimistic and centrist Barack Obama delivered his annual State of the Union speech on Tuesday where he talked lengthy about the country’s economic and social issues and went on to praise the “American exceptionalism” that the rest of the world has always admired.

The president revealed that the country needed to get on the path of growth as they did after Sputnik in 1957 when the Soviets beat the Americans into space. He said:

Half a century ago, when the Soviets beat us into space with the launch of a satellite called Sputnik¸ we had no idea how we’d beat them to the moon. The science wasn’t there yet. NASA didn’t even exist. But after investing in better research and education, we didn’t just surpass the Soviets; we unleashed a wave of innovation that created new industries and millions of new jobs.

With the federal budget being the biggest battle between Democrats and Republicans,Barack Obama, went on to reveal that he recognized the need to address the deficit and even took a step towards compromise by proposing budget cuts, without providing many details to the American public. He proposed a State reform and that the tax code for businesses be simplified.

He explained:

So tonight, I’m asking Democrats and Republicans to simplify the system. Get rid of the loopholes. Level the playing field. And use the savings to lower the corporate tax rate for the first time in 25 years – without adding to our deficit.
