Similac Recall 2010

Similac Recall 2010 – Abbot Laboratories, the company that makes the popular infant nutritional powder Similac has been overwhelmed by the response to their recall of the product. The recall was voluntary, and the company was in the middle of an investigation when they learned that some of their product may have been contaminated with parts of bugs. The powder was not considered to be a health risk but the company has advised their customers to return the product anyway as a safety concern.

The company has had a hard time keeping up with their online inquiries as well as the demand of their phone lines. Of course, you can understand why parents would want to call and receive all of the information about a recalled product that they might have already been feeding their children.

The company eventually had to turn away callers from their free phone number, instead leaving customers with a recorded message with all of the necessary information. In the recorded message, the company also told callers that they were not able to speak with a representative because they were overwhelmed.

Abbot announced on Wednesday that they were recalling as many as 5 million containers of its powdered infant formula because internal testing found beetles and other larvae in a small amount of the product. The company has maintained that the issue affected a small portion of their factory and that they do not believe it is an issue with any of their other products.

If you are currently using Similac baby formula, please check out this site, or this one to find out if your product is not being recalled.

I am also taking her to the doctor tomorrow. I am very worried about this!!

  3. My grandaughter is 7 months old, had terrible diarrea , going through 10-12 episodes per day, as well as loss of appetite. within the course of 2 wks, she was in the doctors office 4 times! After learning of the recall, and switching her formula, she is now recovering. there should be compensation for this…..120.00 total spent at doctors, not to mention all the diapers and wipes due to so many changings!

  4. I think that this is a very big concern especially for parent’s. I dont agree with the fact that they are saying that parents shouldn’t panic, show’s me how much they REALLY give a SHIT about anything anymore. These are babies we are talking about. How nice!! Anyway, I turned my kid away from Similac and it will never be used again. I switched to Enfamil and he is doing good.

  5. WATCH THE MOVIE………..BABIES !!!!
CHILDREN FROM AROUND THE WORLD IN POOR COUNTRIES HAVE EATEN BUGS WITHOUT CONSEQUENCES FOR THOUSANDS OF YEARS. GRUBS ARE THEIR DAILY SOURCE OF PROTEIN…………WE ARE SO SPOILED HERE IN THE US.

  6. Spoiled!?! Seriously! You have got to be kidding. This is disgusting. I am PISSED that I’ve been feeding my 3 month old this formula for the past few weeks and had no idea it was infested w/ god knows what until now. No one eats bugs unless it a life or death situation, or you’re just plain weird! I will never use Similac again and if somethings wrong with my baby i will make sure they pay!

  7. Hah, Rasima, little do you know that Enfamil actually has artificial sweetener in their baby formula, but because it’s “safe” in adult food (you know, like those Atkins bars that warn “may have a laxative effect”) they didn’t have to notify anyone about adding it to baby formula. Oh and, guess what else, that chemically manufactured artificial sweetener stuff (called something like polydextrose) in Enfamil hasn’t even been tested in babies under 14 days old! And in older babies it even caused diarrhea, rashes and more fussiness – take this from someone with a biology background who read the actual study and switched to another formula right away… then bingo, my son’s diarrhea went away! Ask your pediatrician about that, it’s how I learned more, then I read the study on my own just to be sure journals.lww.com/jpgn/Fulltext/2007/03000/Term_Infants_Fed_Formula_Supplemented_With.12.aspx)

At least Similac informed consumers, as gross as it was at first, as a parent I feel like they respected our rights to know and to be conscientious about giving the best to our babies. I switched to the Similac liquid and am sending back the recalled powder that I have; thank God no issues with my son so far 🙂
