On Tuesday, a $1.15 billion measure was passed in order to finally fund a settlement between black farmers that had been reached nearly 11 years ago, but never paid out. The original case was the 1997 Pigford v. Glickman case in which black farmers sued for racist discrimination against themselves. The case was settled out of court nearly a decade ago, and each of the qualified farmers were entitled to $50,000 each.
John Boyd is the founder and president of the National Black Farmers Association, said “It’s vindication and justice for black farmers. This is what I wanted. I wanted a final restitution from the government so the black farmers can move on.”
President Obama recently commented on the legislation, saying that he believed the legislation passed on Tuesday would “bring this painful chapter in our nation’s history to a close.”
Although Boyd said that the $50,000 that each farmer would receive was more than the amounts the individual farmers were denied, he still believes that no amount of money would be able to make up for discrimination that the farmers faced. Boyd said, “I don’t think this is about the money. I think this is about justice.”

I am just glad that justice will be served for the poor class of Americans,because we are living in poverty in Mississippi and it seems that no one even cares,we have to live and try to survive off a small amount of money each week something you can just maybe pay one bill and buy a small amount of groceries. I still think that if the President would have given each family a certain amount of money,in Mississippi before he distibuted it to the car dealers and etc. I really and truly believe that would have brought up the economy, because we would have bought things and the economy had no other choice but to expand. My mother was a hard working farmer,and now she has deceased and she had filled out a claim form for the black farmers,I need to know if her children could recieve her portion since she has deceased. We are struggling down here and it don’t seem like things are going to get better. But we need some help in Mississippi, there are no jobs,and what few there are you have to be a genius to apply for them.
